What You’ll Need to Make This Crochet Cup Cozy

To make this cute and easy crochet cup cozy, you’ll need a #5 bulky weight yarn — and the best part is, you don’t need much of it! It’s a perfect little project for using up leftover yarn from your stash.

Don’t have bulky yarn? No problem! You can easily substitute with a #4 medium-weight yarn by holding two strands together to match the thickness of a #5. Or, if you prefer to use just one strand, simply adjust the foundation chain and number of rows to make sure your cozy fits snugly around your cup. I’ll include all the details and tips for customizing the pattern!

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • The skill level is easy
  • The pattern is designed for a 19-oz cup, but for different cup sizes or yarn weights, simply adjust your foundation chain to fit snugly around the bottom of the cup. Then, crochet to the desired height.
  • For a perfect fit, especially if your cup is narrower at the bottom and wider at the top, here’s a tip: crochet the first 4 rounds with a slightly smaller size hook. After that, continue the rest of the pattern with your main crochet hook. This adjustment ensures that your cup cozy will snugly hug the shape of your cup from top to bottom.

Recommended Yarn: ** Premier yarns Colorfusion Chunky**, #5 bulky yarn. Colors shown: Autumn Sky. In some images, I used Painted Desert

Yardage: About 35 yards

Yarn substitution

Crochet hooks

  1. J/6mm
  2. K/6.5mm

Gauge: 4″ square/ 6.5mm hook=11SC and 12 rows

Materials

  1. Leather tag
  2. A tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Abbreviations

  • CH: Chain
  • ST: Stitch
  • SL ST: Slip stitch
  • SC: Single crochet
  • HDC: Half double crochet

Special stitches:

Half double crochet in the 3rd loop: Instead of working into the top two loops like normal, find the 3rd loop — it’s just below the top loops, usually behind the stitch. Insert your hook into that 3rd loop, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over again, and pull through all three loops. Watch here.
