Choose the Right Yarn for a Sturdy Crochet Bag

For this free crochet crossbody bag pattern, I highly recommend using mercerized cotton yarn. It helps your Macchiato Messenger Bag stay nice and sturdy, shows off your stitches beautifully, and won’t stretch out when you load it up with all your everyday essentials.

Other regular cotton yarn—especially a thicker option like Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn—will work just fine. You’ll just need to adjust your hook size to meet the gauge or tweak your starting stitch count (you’ll find more details in the pattern!) since the bag may turn out a bit wider.

Choosing the right yarn really makes all the difference in how your crochet messenger bag pattern turns out. Thicker regular cotton yarn will work, but mercerized cotton works best—your finished bag will look polished, hold its shape, and be perfect as your go-to everyday crossbody bag.

Macchiato Bag, a stylish crochet crossbody bag made from the free crochet pattern.

Step 1 –  Crochet the bag

Note: With the recommended yarn, the bag may be a little wider when you start, but it will shrink as you crochet.

With yarn A, chain 42 loosely to make a foundation chain,

Rnd 1:

  • 2 SC in the 2nd CH from the hook, SC in the next 39 CH, 3 SC in the last CH. Work into one loop only of each chain. We’ll use the other loop in the next step. (44 SC)
  • Continue crocheting along the other side of the chains, working into the unused loops. SC in the next 39 CH (crochet over the tail to hide it), SC in the last CH that already has 2 SC. join with a SL ST into the 1st SC, CH 2. (84 SC total)

Rnd 2: DC in same ST as CH 2, and in each of the next 2 ST, CH 3, sk next 3 ST,* DC in next 3 ST, CH 3, sk next 3 ST,* rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the top CH 2. CH 2.

Rnd 3: *CH 3 (you should have a total of 5 starting CH), sk next 3 ST, [DC in next CH-3 sp, DC in middle ST of 3 skipped STs of the previous round, DC in same CH-3 sp],* rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 2nd CH of the starting 5 CH, CH 2.

Rnd 4: *[DC in next CH-3 sp, DC in middle ST of 3 skipped STs of the previous round, DC in same CH-3 sp], CH 3, sk next 3 ST,* rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the top CH 2, CH 2.

Rnd 5 – 6: Rep Rnd 3- 4. At the end of Rnd 6, change to yarn B, CH 2.

Note: To change colors, simply join the round with the new color by slip stitching with the new yarn, then cut the old color.

Rnd 7 – 8: Rep Rnd 3 – 4. At the end of Rnd 8, change to yarn C, CH 2.

Rnd 9 – 10: Rep Rnd 3 – 4. At the end of Rnd 10, change to yarn B, CH 2.

Rnd 11 – 23: Rep Rnd 3 – 4. At the end of Rnd 23, CH 2.

Rnd 24: *[DC in each of the next 3 skipped STs of the previous round, SC in next 3 ST,* rep *to* around, join with SL ST into the top CH 2, CH 2. (84 ST)

Rnd 25: Keep your tension a little tight. DC in each ST around, SL ST into the top CH 2, CH 1. (84 ST)

Rnd 26:* Skip next ST to the right, RSC in next ST to the right*, rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st RSC, CH 1.

Rnd 27: SL ST in each DC of Rnd 25 (below the RSC row) around. Fasten off and cut the yarn.

Rnd 28: Slip knot, then SL ST into the 1st DC of Rnd 24, SL ST into each ST around, referring to the picture below. Fasten off.

Step 2 – Crochet the straps

The shoulder strap:

With yarn B, CH 194 (for a 44” strap) or to the desired length.

  1. DC in the 3rd CH from the hook and in each CH across, do not turn.
  2. Crochet a SC in each stitch around the strap, starting with 2 SC in the last DC (working into the DC itself to avoid creating holes). When you reach the starting chains, make 1 SC in each CH. Continue crocheting SC around the strap, then join with a SL ST into the first SC, CH 1.
  3. *RSC in next ST to the right, SK next ST to the right,* rep *to* around. Pro tip: Do not skip a stitch between the RSC at both ends of the strap. This helps it stay flat.
  4. At the end of the row, remove the hook, insert the hook from the back to the front into the  1st RSC, pull the working loop to the back, CH 1. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

The closure strap:

With yarn B, CH 18. Then work the closure strap using the same instructions you used for the shoulder strap.

Step 3 – Attach the straps

The shoulder strap

  1. Sew the flat metal slide buckle to the top corner of the bag using yarn B and a needle.
  2. Slide the end of the strap through the attached metal rectangle, making sure the right side is facing out.
  3. Fold the strap back so the end overlaps the main part of the strap by about 1–1.5 inches.
  4. Secure the folded end by sewing it in place with yarn B and a needle.
  5. For the other side, sew the slide buckle to the bag as you did with the first. Slide the strap end through it, making sure it’s not twisted.

The closure strap

  1. Position the closure strap in the center of the back panel, on the inside of the bag. Using the long tail from the strap, sew it securely in place with small, even stitches.
  2. On the wrong side of the closure strap, sew one half of the magnetic snap securely in place.
  3. Position the corresponding half of the snap on the front panel of the bag so that when the strap is folded over, the snap aligns perfectly.
  4. Sew the front snap piece firmly in place, making sure both pieces are centered and match up.

Step 4 – Line your bag

Lining your bag is easy—no major sewing skills required (hand sewing works perfectly!). You’ll make a fabric pouch the same size as your crocheted bag, slide it in, and stitch up the top. I chose a magnetic snap for closure, but you can add a zipper if you prefer (link below).

  1. Iron your fabric to remove any wrinkles.
  2. Lay the fabric flat on a smooth surface and fold it in half.
  3. Place your bag on top of the folded fabric, with the bottom of the bag aligned along the folded edge.
  4. Trace around the bag, leaving about ½-inch extra on the sides and top, then cut out your fabric.
  5. Sew the sides of the fabric together, leaving the top edge open—you’ve now made a pouch!
  6. Slide the pouch inside the bag, with the right side of the fabric facing out.
  7. Adjust the lining so it fits neatly, then fold down about ½ inch of fabric at the top and clip or pin it to the crochet bag.
  8. Using a needle and thread, stitch around the top edge, sewing the lining and crochet together securely.
