Step 1 – Crochet the bag

With a 6.5 mm hook, CH 33 to make a foundation chain,

Rnd 1: 2 SC in the 2nd CH from the hook, SC in next 31 CH, 3 SC in the last CH, continue crocheting along the back unused loops of the foundation chain, SC in next 30 CH (crochet over the tail to hide it), SC in the last CH already holding 2 SC, CH1 (you may place your ST marker here ), crochet continuously next round.

Rnd 2: * SC in next 2 ST, CH 1, skip next ST,* rep to around, crochet continuously next Rnd.

Rnd 3: * 2 SC in next CH-1 sp, CH 1* rep to around, crochet continuously next Rnd.

Rnd 4 – 27: Rep Rnd 3. At the end of Rnd 27, lay your bag flat, place 2 stitch markers in the corners.

Note: In the next round, you will attach the metal rectangles to each corner of the bag by crocheting over them. If you prefer, you can also sew the metal rectangle in place at the end.

Rnd 28: Repeat Rnd 3, and when you reach the corners (refer to the pictures below), place the metal rectangle underneath the edge of the bag. Work (2 SC in the next CH-1 space, CH 1) over the rectangle, inserting your hook through both the rectangle and the CH-1 spaces. If needed, secure the rectangle with
additional SC. Watch here: how to crochet over a metal rectangle.

Step 2 – Crochet the strap

Leave an 8” long tail for sewing, use a 5 mm hook, CH 130 ( for a 45” strap, adjust the length of the strap to your liking).

Row 1: HDC in 2nd CH from the hook, HDC in next 128 CH, 5 SC in next CH, continue crocheting along the back unused loops of the foundation chain, HDC in next 128 CH, 5 SC in next CH.

Row 2: SL ST in every ST around, fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing.

Step 3 – Attach the strap

  • Thread the ends of the strap through the metal rectangles, then fold them in half.
  • Sew the strap ends using a needle and the long tail. Cut and weave in ends.

Step 4 – Crochet the string

  • With a 5 mm hook, make a magic ring. * 2 HDC, SL ST* x 5 times in the ring, join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, CH 42, in the 2nd CH from the hook * 2 HDC, SL ST* x 5 times, join with a SL ST in 1st HDC, fasten off. Cut and weave in ends.
  • Fold the string in half, then thread it through the metal rectangle, forming a little loop. Pull both ends through the loop to make a knot.

Step 5 – Line your bag

Lining the bag is easy – no need for major sewing skills (hand sewing works!). You will make a fabric pouch the same size as your crocheted bag, slide it in, and stitch up the top. To close the bag, you can add a magnetic snap or a zipper, following the links below.

  • Iron the fabric you are planning to use.
  • Lay your fabric out on a smooth surface, and fold it in half.
  • Place your bag on top of it. The bottom of the bag should be on top of the folded side of the fabric.
  • Trace around the bag, leaving roughly 1/2-inch extra fabric along the sides and top of the bag, then cut out your fabric.
  • Sew the sides of the fabric, leaving the top side only unsewed. You just made a pouch!
  • Place the pouch inside the bag, the right side of the fabric facing out.
  • Adjust the lining carefully, fold down the fabric roughly 1/2 inch at the top, and clip or pin it to the crochet bag.
  • Use a needle and thread to stitch around the top of the bag, sewing the lining and crochet together.
  • Attach the magnetic closure, and you are all done!
