The Perfect Yarn for Your Blue Moon Beanie

The Blue Moon Hat Free Crochet Pattern calls for a #5 bulky weight yarn, but don’t worry—this yarn is on the lighter side and feels similar to a #4 medium weight yarn.

For my version, I used Lion Brand Scarfie Yarn, a gorgeous yarn with stunning color options. If you’re exploring alternatives, I highly recommend Caron Colorama Halo Cake Yarn, Caron Latte Cakes Self-Striping Yarn, Red Heart Roll Melange Yarn, or Lion Brand Ferris Wheel Yarn—all of which will work beautifully.

Prefer a #4 yarn instead? That’s absolutely fine! Just be sure to check your gauge so the hat turns out to be a perfect fit.

Pattern details

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Skill level: Easy to Intermediate.
  • This hat is crocheted from the bottom up, in rows for the brim and in rounds for the body.
  • Instead of working continuously in a circle, you work back and forth from the starting stitch. You must turn your work at the end of each round, working one round on the right side of the work (RS) and the following round on the wrong side of the work (WS). Use a stitch marker to identify the start of rounds.
  • The slip stitch and CH1 do not count as stitches.
  • Different tensions can affect the final measurements of the hat.
  • If you cannot match the gauge, you will need to adjust the stitches around the body of the hat, the number of rows, and possibly the brim length.

Recommended yarn:🧶Lion Brand Yarn Scarfie, #5 Bulky weight yarn, color shown: Denim/ Navy. This #5 bulky yarn is on the thinner side, more like a heavy worsted weight yarn. #4 medium-weight yarns can also work, as long as you meet the gauge.

Yardage

  • Child size: 140 yd
  • Teen size: 160 yd
  • Adult size: 195 yd

Yarn substitution: These yarns are a close match, but you should always swatch.

Crochet Hooks

  1. 4.5mm for the brim
  2. (J) 6mm for the body

Or needed hooks to meet the gauge.

Other Materials

  1. Pom-pom: 6”pom-pom
  2. Tag: Faux leather tags
  3. Tapestry needle: to weave in ends.

Gauge: I measured on the hat laid flat and before wear.

  • For the body of the hat: 4” square/ 6 mm hook = 14 rows & 5 pf stitches
  • For the brim: 1” square/ 4.5 mm hook = 3 rows & 6 SC

Abbreviations

  • ch: Chain
  • st: Stitch
  • slst: Slip stitch
  • sc: Single crochet
  • hdc: Half double crochet
  • dc: Double crochet
  • pf: Puff stitch
  • blo: Back loop only
  • sc dec: Single crochet decrease
  • yo: Yarn over
  • WS: Wrong side
  • RS: Right side
  • Rnd: Round

Special stitches

  • Single crochet decrease(sc dec): Insert the hook into the st, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the next st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all loops.
  • Puff stitch( pf): (Yo, insert the hook in the next st, pull up a loop) x 3 times in same st, yo, pull through all 7 loops.

Size and measurements

The pattern provides instructions for:

  • Child ages 3-10 or head circumference of 19”-20”. Hat height is 8” x 8” wide.
  • Ages 11 & up or head circumference of 20”-22”. Hat height is 8 ½ ” x 9 ” wide.
  • Adult large or head circumference of 23”-24”. Hat height is 9 ½ ” x 10” wide.
  • The stitch count and instructions for each size can be found in parentheses in the corresponding color (available in the premium version only).

How to Adjust the Pattern for Other Sizes

For other sizes, measure the brim to comfortably encircle the head (slightly snug but still comfortable). Make sure the number of rows is a multiple of 3, then follow the pattern and crochet until reaching the desired length, stopping one inch before completion. Crochet the decrease rows following the pattern.

    1. Hi Collene! If you’re referring to today’s free pattern—the Infinity Scarf—please make sure you’re following the designer’s directions. I believe it’s a download on Ravelry, and you’ll need to copy and paste the code at checkout. I just checked and it’s working on my end.

If you’re referring to the Blue Moon Hat, the free download has expired (it was available for 24 hours only), but you can still enjoy the free pattern on the blog.
