Step 1- Crochet the brim

Row 1: With a 5mm hook, CH (9, 10,11): SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH across, turn. (8, 9, 10)ST

Row 2: CH1, SC in the same ST, SC BLO in next  ST, SC in the last ST, turn. (8, 9, 10)ST

Rows 3 – Row (65, 69, 73): Rep Row 2. Do not fasten off at the end of the last row. (8, 9, 10)ST

🧶For the best fit: Check your gauge here; you should have 9 SC BLO and 8 rows in a 2″ square.
If your gauge doesn’t match, adjust your hook size: if you have more than 8 rows in 2”, go down a hook size until it matches; if you have fewer than 8 rows, go up a hook size until it matches.

🧶If you’re making this hat in other sizes, make sure the band fits snug but comfortably around your head. If it doesn’t—or if you’re making a different size—simply add or remove rows in multiples of 4 + 1, and try it on until it fits.

Step 2 – Join the brim

Fold the brim in half, then line up the two ends. SL ST grabbing both, the 1st ST (BLO) on one side and the 1st foundation CH on the other side. SL ST into each ST (BLO) and the opposite CH of the foundation chain from the other edge. When you reach the end, remove your hook from your work and flip the brim inside out. This will now be the right side of your work.

Step 3 – Crochet the Body

Rnd 1 (RS): With a 6 mm hook, CH1, SC in each row of the brim (visible holes), join with a SL ST into the 1st SC. Do not turn.(65, 69, 73) SC

Rnd 2 (RS): CH2 (doesn’t count as a ST), 3 DC in same ST, *skip next 3 ST, (SC, CH1, 3 DC) in the next ST*, rep *to* around, ending with skip next 3 ST, SC in the last ST, join with SL ST into the top CH2, CH2, turn (16, 17, 18) (3 DC groups).

Rnd 3 (WS): (SL ST doesn’t count as a ST). *Skip next 3 ST, FPDC in next DC (last DC of the 3 DC group – Pic1), CH1, 3 DC in the CH-1 sp (behind the FPDC- Pic 2)*, rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the top CH2, CH 2, turn (16, 17, 18) (3 DC groups).

Rnd 4 (RS): (SL ST doesn’t count as a ST). Sk next 2 ST,*FPDC in next DC, CH1, 3 DC in the CH-1 sp (behind the FPDC), sk next 3 ST*, rep *to* around, finish with 3 DC in the CH-1 sp (behind the FPDC), join with a SL ST into the top CH2, CH 2, turn. (16, 17, 18) (3 DC groups).

Rnd 5 – Rnd (10, 12, 12) or to the desired height: Rep Rnd 4, turning your work at the end of each round. At the end of last round CH1, Do not turn.(16, 17, 18) (3 DC groups).

Step 4 – Close the Hat

Note: Do not turn at the end of the rows. Do not count the CH-1 sp as a stitch, and keep your tension tight.

Rnd (11, 13, 13): HDC in the next ST, *HDC2tog, HDC in the next 2 ST,* rep *to* around, HDC in the remaining STs, join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, CH 1. (48, 51, 54)

Rnd (12, 14, 14): *HDC in the next 2 ST, HDC2tog,* rep *to* around, HDC in the remaining STs, join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, CH1. (36, 37, 41)

Rnd (13, 15, 15):*HDC in the next 2 ST, HDC2tog,* rep *to* around, HDC in the remaining STs, join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, CH1. (27, 28, 31)

Rnd (14, 16, 16): *HDC in the next 2 ST, HDC2tog,* rep *to* around, HDC in the remaining STs, join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, CH1. (20, 21, 24) (20, 21, 24)

Fasten off, leaving a 6–8” tail to close the hole at the top of the hat. Using a tapestry needle, weave the tail through the stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Secure and weave in any remaining loose ends.
