Best Yarn Choice for This Free Valentine’s Day Scarf
For my scarf, I chose Caron Cloud Cakes Perfect Phasing Yarn, and it works beautifully for this project. Even though it’s a #4 medium-weight yarn, it feels airy and lightweight—almost like a #3—, making it perfect for a lightweight crochet scarf with great drape. It’s incredibly soft, comfortable to wear all day, and the smooth stitch definition really shows off the chevron pattern. The soft pink color changes create a romantic, dreamy look, making it a lovely choice for a Valentine’s Day crochet scarf.
Don’t feel limited to pink, though. This beginner-friendly crochet scarf pattern looks just as nice in a solid color, classic red and white, or even simple color blocks. Choosing different colors is an easy way to make the scarf your own and match your personal style.

Step 1: Make 4 tassels (optional)
Pro Tip: If you’re using a self-striping yarn, it’s best to make the tassels first—make two tassels from each end of the yarn ball, then crochet the scarf with the remaining yarn. Feel free to add the tassels at the very end if you prefer!
- It’s easier to use a tassel maker, but you can also use a 5-inch square piece of cardboard. Cut a 5 “piece of cardboard.
- Wrap the yarn around the cardboard about 50 times (or as many as you like).
- Slide a piece of yarn under the top of the loops and tie a tight knot.
- Cut the loops at the bottom of the cardboard.
- Wrap another piece of yarn around the tassel, about 1 inch from the top, and tie it securely.
- Trim the ends to make them even.
- If needed, watch this tutorial to learn how to make a tassel.
Step 2- Crochet the scarf
Chain 45 to make a foundation chain,
Row 1: DC in the 4th CH from hook, DC in each of next 4 CHs,*(DC, CH 2, DC ) in next CH, DC in each of next 6 CHs, skip next 2 CHs, DC in each of next 6 CHs,* rep *to* across ending with,*(DC, CH 2, DC ) in next CH, DC in each of next 6 CHs, turn.
Row 2: CH 3 (counts as a DC), DC2tog BLO, DC BLO in each of next 4 ST, *DC in next CH, CH 2, DC in next CH, DC BLO in each of next 6 ST, skip next 2 ST, DC BLO in each of next 6 ST,* rep *to* across ending with *DC in next CH, CH 2, DC in next CH, DC BLO in each of next 4 ST, DC2tog BLO in next 2 ST, DC in top CH3 (BLO), turn—note: DC in the chain’s loop, not the CH-sp.

Row 3 -145 or to the desired length: Rep Row 2. At the end of the last row, fasten off.
Finish off your project by attaching tassels to each corner, and you’re all done!
