This free crochet table runner pattern makes a pretty 15″ × 73″ runner in soft, washable cotton.

Madison Table Set flat lay — crochet table runner, round placemats, and coasters in cream, blush, and sage

Meet the Madison Runner — the last piece of the Madison Table Set, and the one that pulls the whole set together. The body is worked in single crochet, then finished with an elegant puff stitch border that matches the placemats and coasters.

It’s the biggest piece at around 1,200 yards, so give yourself some time with it — and it’s easy to adjust if you need it longer or shorter to fit your table. But once it’s on? The whole thing finally looks finished

The Madison Runner coordinates with the placemats and coasters — and every pattern is free right here on the blog.

Pattern notes

  • The table runner is crocheted lengthwise.
  • To adjust the size of the table runner, make a foundation chain in multiples of 3+1, then crochet the desired width.
  • The numbers at the end of the rows are the stitch count for that row.

Special stitches

  • PUFF STITCH (PF): * YO, insert hook in indicated sp, pull up a loop,* rep *to* 3 more times in same sp. (9 loops on hook.) YO, pull through all loops, CH 1 to close the PF (CH1 doesn’t count as a ST)
  • Stacked single crochet (SSC): Work 1 SC in the 1st ST, then insert the hook into the left vertical bar of the SC just made, YO and pull up a loop, YO, and pull through both loops. Watch here.
  • Cross Stitch: Sk the next ST or STS, then work 1 DC in the next ST. Working in front of the DC you just made, work 1 DC in the skipped stitch. The two stitches cross to form an “X.” Watch here.

Crochet the table runner

Note: The table runner is worked lengthwise in single crochet and finished with a lacy border (band) on each side. The runner is crocheted in two steps: first, crochet the initial band and fasten off. Next, crochet the second band and body section separately, then attach the first band to it. This keeps the band stitches facing the same direction.

1st Section- 1st band

Row 1 (RS): With a 5 mm hook, CH 280 (or any multiple of 3 + 1). SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH across. Turn. (279 ST)

Row 2: SSC, *SK the next 2 ST, DC in the next ST, CH 2, DC in the last skipped ST to form a Cross ST; rep from * across until 2 ST remain, SK the next ST, DC in the last ST. CH 1, turn. (92 Cross ST, 1 DC, 1 SSC)

Row 3: 2 SC in the first ST, SK the next ST, *3 SC in the next CH- 2 sp, SK the next 2 ST, (SC, PF, SC) in the next CH-2 sp, SK the next 2 ST; rep from * until 1 ST remains, SC in the last ST. CH 1, turn. (279 ST)

Row 4: SC in the first ST, SC FLO in each ST across, SC in the last ST. Turn. (279 ST)

Row 5: SSC, DC in the next ST, *CH 1, SK the next ST, DC in the next ST; rep from * until 1 ST remains, DC in the last ST. CH 1, turn. (140 DC)

Row 6: SC in each ST and CH-1 sp across. Fasten off. (279 ST)

2nd  Section- the body:

Repeat the 1st Section instructions from Rows 1–6, then continue with the following:

Row 7: SC in the first ST, SC BLO in each ST across, SC in the last ST. Turn. (279 ST). Note: Rows 7–61: skip the turning chain for neater edges

Row 8–61 (or until desired width): SC in each ST across. Turn. At the end of the last row, do not fasten off. Note: Make sure the final row is worked on the right side (RS)of the piece.

Finish the table runner
