Best Yarn Choice for Your Mayflower Throw blanket

You can use any yarn weight for this autumn crochet project, but I highly recommend using a #5 bulky yarn. Not only will your blanket work up much faster, but it will also be warmer and cozier. Plus, the thicker yarn enhances the texture of the leaves, making them look fuller and more defined.

If you prefer a lighter blanket, you can still use a #4 worsted-weight yarn or even something finer, but a bulkier yarn truly brings out the autumn-inspired design and gives the afghan the right thickness and feel.

For my throw, I used Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Everyday Bulky Yarn, which is on the thinner side of #5. It’s super soft and an absolute dream to work with. The fall colors are so rich, and I can’t wait to use them to decorate my home for Thanksgiving.

Note: For best results, use #5 bulky yarn—it makes the spike stitches look fuller and helps the throw work up faster. You can also use #4 worsted-weight yarn, just adjust the hook size and foundation chains to match your desired measurements.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • The skill level is intermediate.
  • To change yarn color at the end of a row, finish the last stitch until two loops remain on the hook. Yarn over with the new color and pull through both loops. Cut the old yarn, leaving a tail to weave in later, and continue with the new yarn.

Finished Measurements

The pattern is written for a blanket measuring approximately 41” wide by 50” long. To adjust the size, refer to the sizing table and choose your preferred dimensions. Begin with a foundation chain that matches your desired width—this should be a multiple of 6 plus 3 stitches. Continue crocheting until you reach the recommended length for your size, alternating colors as instructed in the pattern. Finish your blanket with the same color you used to start.

Special Stitch

In this pattern, I used a modified spike stitch cluster. It’s worked into rows below, pointing in different directions, and looks the same on both sides. You’ll quickly get into a rhythm, but it’s best to count your stitches at the end of each row and double-check the first few repeats/ rows. Keep the spikes loose enough to reach the correct rows, but not too loose so they lay flat and don’t look too loopy.

How to crochet a Spike Stitch Cluster (SSC): (A full photo tutorial is included in the premium version only)

  • 1st leg: YO, insert your hook one row below and one stitch behind, pull up a loop.
  • 2nd leg: YO, insert your hook two rows below the next stitch, and pull up a loop.
  • 3rd leg: YO, skip the next two stitches, insert your hook one row below the next ST, and pull up a loop.
  • Close the SSC: YO and pull through all loops on your hook to complete the stitch.

Step 1 – Crochet the throw

With yarn A, CH 129 to make a foundation chain. For other sizes, make a foundation chain that is a multiple of 6 plus 3, until you reach the desired width.

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook, SC in each CH across, CH 1, turn. (128 ST)

Row 2-4: (Yarn A) SC in each ST across. At the end of the last Row, change to Yarn B, CH 1, turn. Cut Yarn A. (128 ST)

Row 5: (Yarn B) SC in next 3 ST,*SSC in next ST, CH 1, SC in next 4 ST,* rep *to* until 4 ST remaining, SSC in next ST, CH 1, SC in last 3 ST, CH 1, turn. (128 ST)

Note

  • The 1st SC of the four SCs should be placed in the ST directly above the ST holding the 3rd leg of the SSC (see picture below).
  • The placement of the stitches may feel tricky at first, but once you position the SSC correctly in the setup rows (Row 5 and Row 9), the pattern will become much easier to follow.

Row 6-8: (Yarn B) SC in each ST across ( CH 1 counts as a ST), at the end of the last Row, change to yarn C, CH 1, turn. Cut yarn B. (128 ST)

Row 9: (Yarn C) SC in next 6 ST,* SSC in next ST, CH 1, SC in next 4 ST,* rep *to* ending with SSC ST in next ST, CH 1, SC in next 6 ST, CH 1, turn.

Row 10-12: (Yarn C) SC in each ST across (CH 1 counts as a ST), at the end of the last Row, change to yarn A, CH 1, turn. Cut yarn C. (1278 ST)

Row 13: (Yarn A) SC in next 3 ST,* SSC, CH 1, SC in next 4 ST,* rep *to* until 4 ST remaining, SSC in next ST, CH 1, SC in last 3 ST, CH 1, turn. (128 ST)

Row 14-172 (or to the desired length): Rep Row 6-13, alternating Yarn A, B, and C. At the end of the last row, CH 1, turn.

Don’t cut the working yarn. Weave in all ends and crochet the border next.

Step 2 – Crochet the border

Rnd 1: With yarn A, *SC in each ST across until you reach the corner, 2 SC in the corner, SC in each row until you reach the next corner, 2 SC in the corner,* rep around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH 1, do not turn.

Rnd 2: * 2 SC in the corner, SC in each ST across,*rep *to* around, join with a SL ST in the 1st ST, CH 1, do not turn.

Rnd 3: *(SC, CH2, SC) in the corner, skip next ST,* rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, fasten off.

Weave in all ends, and you are all done!
