How This Crochet Classic Christmas Stocking Made

This large crochet stocking is designed to be both easy and fun to make—perfect for holiday crocheting without the stress! It’s worked in one piece from the toe up, with no sewing involved except for a quick stitch up the sides of the heel at the end.

I used a simple one-row repeat stitch that not only adds beautiful texture but also gives the stocking a nice, sturdy feel—which is exactly what you want in a handmade Christmas stocking. For the colors, I chose classic Christmas shades: deep red, green, and beige, for that warm, timeless holiday look.

One of my favorite things about this pattern is how easy it is to change colors. You don’t need to cut the contrast yarn each time, which means no ends to weave in (yay!). It makes the whole process quicker and way more enjoyable—perfect for when you want to make more than one!

The color possibilities with this pattern are endless. I made both a solid color version and a striped one, and I’ve included detailed instructions for both, so you can pick your favorite—or go ahead and make one of each!

Yarn Needed to Crochet a Traditional Christmas Stocking

You can use any #4 worsted-weight yarn for this project, but I personally love Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in classic Christmas colors. The shades aren’t overly bright or flashy—they have that rich, deep, and elegant look that just feels right for the holidays. I’ve used them for years, and they never disappoint! But of course, that’s just my personal favorite. 😊

If you’re going for a more neutral or modern vibe, try using nude or earthy tones instead. It gives the stocking a clean, cozy look that still feels festive but blends beautifully with modern holiday decor.

Think gray, red, and white, or try different shades of blue, brown, or even soft pink tones for the little ones! There’s so much room to play with color in this pattern, and that’s one of the things I love most about it.

  1. MacKenzie says:

    hello,

I was curious if there’s a way to make this double the size using either weight 4 or 5 yarn? instead of using a larger hook?

    thank you!

    1. Hey Mackenzie! So if you want to make this stocking bigger, the easiest way is just to double up a #4 yarn. But you can also add more stitches at the start. Keep that increase pattern the same for the toe section (keep in mind you need to get to the desired stocking width by the end of the toe section). Then you’ll need to tweak the row numbers for each section to match the width. And don’t forget about the heel — you’ll need to adjust the stitch count there too!
