Free Crochet Bauble Ornament Pattern- Start Here

Recommended Yarn: 🧶Big Twist Value Yarn, #4 medium-weight yarn. Color shown: Yuletide. Note: This color is currently unavailable, but it may be back around Christmas.

Yardage: About 100 yds

Yarn Substitution:

Crochet Hooks: (H) 5mm

Other Materials:

  1. 4” Ball Plastic Ornaments
  2. Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Gauge: 2” square = 4 rows & 4 ST (pattern ST)

Finished Dimensions:

  • The rectangle measures 4″ wide by 9″ long when laid flat.
  • The bauble measures 4″ in diameter.

For other sizes and yarn weights

If you’re using the same size bauble and yarn weight, no adjustments are needed—just follow the pattern as is. But if you’re using a different yarn weight or bauble size, follow these steps:

  1. Select your yarn (any weight) and the appropriate hook size.
  2. Crochet a multiple of 2 foundation chain that stretches from the middle bottom to the top opening of the ornament. Stretch the chain for a snug fit.
  3. Crochet a rectangular piece using the pattern stitch until it wraps snugly around the ball. Then, follow the pattern instructions to close it.

Step 1 – Crochet the rectangle

CH 18 to make a foundation chain.

Row 1: YO, insert the hook in 2nd CH from hook, pull up a loop, YO, skip next CH, insert the hook in next CH, pull up a loop, YO, pull through all 5 loops on hook, CH 1, *YO, insert hook in last CH, pull up a loop, YO, skip next ST, insert the hook in next CH, pull up a loop, YO, pull thought all 5 loops on hook, CH 1,* rep *to* across ending with an HDC in last ST (already holding last ST group), CH1, turn. You should have 8 groups.

Row 2: YO, insert the hook in next CH 1-sp, pull up a loop, YO, skip next ST, insert the hook in next CH1-sp, pull up a loop, YO, pull through all 5 loops on hook, CH 1, *YO, insert hook in last CH 1-sp, pull up a loop, YO, skip next ST, insert the hook in next CH1-sp, pull up a loop, YO, pull though all 5 loops on hook, CH 1,* rep *to* across, ending with a HDC in last ST (already holding last group), CH1, turn. You should have 8 groups.

Row 3 -19: Rep Rnd 2. At the end of Row 19, cut your yarn, leaving about 12” long tail for sewing.

Step 2 – Assemble your ornament

Close the bottom

  1. Using a tapestry needle, thread the long tail through the edge, one row at a time.
  2. When you reach the end, pull the yarn tight to close the bottom and secure it with a knot.

Sew the side

  1. Sew along the side by grabbing one stitch from the foundation chain and one from the last row, working halfway up. Then, insert the plastic ball into the crochet cover.
  2. Continue sewing until you reach the top, then secure with a knot.

Close the top

  1. Thread the yarn through the foundation chain at the top, pulling tight to close.
  2. Secure the closure with a few knots.

Cut your yarn, weave in the ends. Embellish your ornament with a ribbon, and you are all done!
