This Heartland crochet blanket is so much fun to make, combining mixed stitch crochet and alternating colors to create something unique and pretty! My pattern testers have made some absolutely stunning versions that make my heart happy.

This crochet throw pattern calls for #4 medium-weight yarn in 5 colors and is suitable for advanced beginner crochet enthusiasts and beyond. Gauge: 4” square = 12 rows x 14 DC

Finished Measurements: The pattern is written for a lap blanket measuring about 47” in length and 36″ in width.

To make a different size, use the sizing table to pick your size:

Width: Make a foundation chain that fits your width. It should be a multiple of 6 plus 2 stitches.
Length: Crochet the pattern repeats until you reach the desired length.

Step 1- Crochet the blanket

With yarn A, CH (116) to make a foundation chain.

Row 1: SC in 2^nd CH from the hook, SC in each CH across, change to yarn B in the last ST, cut yarn A, CH1, turn. (115 ST)

Row 2: (Yarn B) SC in each ST across, change to yarn C, cut yarn B, CH1, turn.

Row 3: (Yarn C) SC in each ST across, change to yarn A, cut yarn C, CH1, turn.

Row 4: (Yarn A), SC in each ST across, turn.

Row 5: (Yarn A) STSC in 1^st ST, DC in each ST across, change to yarn B, cut yarn A, CH 2, turn.

Row 6: (Yarn B) HDC in 1^st ST, sk next ST, 2 HDC in next ST,* rep *to* until 2 ST remaining, sk next ST, HDC in last ST, change to yarn D, cut yarn B, CH2, turn.

Row 7: (Yarn D) 2 HDC in sp between 1^st HDC and next 2 HDC group, 2 HDC in sp between each of the 2 HDC groups across, 2 HDC in sp between last 2 HDC group and last HDC, HDC in last ST, change to yarn E, cut yarn D, CH1, turn.

Row 8: (Yarn E) SC in each ST across, change to yarn C, cut yarn E, CH1, turn.

Row 9-11: Rep rows 3 to 5. At the end of Row 11, change to yarn E, cut yarn A, and turn.

Row 12: (Yarn E) (STSC, 2 DC) in 1^st ST,*sk next 2 ST, SC in next ST, sk next 2 ST, 5 DC in next ST,* rep *to* across ending with 3 DC in last ST, change to yarn D, cut yarn E, CH1, turn.

Row 13: (Yarn D) SC in 1^st ST,*sk next 2 ST, 5 DC in next ST, sk next 2 ST, SC in next ST,* rep *to* across, change to yarn B, cut yarn D, turn.

Row 14: Rep Row 12, change to yarn A, cut yarn B, CH1, turn.

Row 15: (Yarn A) SC in the 1^st 2 ST, *HDC in next ST, DC in next ST, HDC in next ST, SC in next 3 ST,* rep *to* across, ending with a SC in last 2 ST, CH1, turn.

Row 16: (Yarn A) SC in each ST across, turn.

Row 17: (Yarn A) STSC, DC in each ST across, change to yarn B, cut yarn A, CH1, turn.

Row 18-120: Repeat rows 2 to 17, ending with row 8, change to yarn C, cut yarn E, CH1, turn.

Note: For other sizes, crochet to the desired length, ending with Row 8. Then, add the last 2 rows to complete the design.

Row 121: (Yarn C) SC in each ST across, change to yarn A, cut yarn C, CH1, turn.

Row 122: (Yarn A) SC in each ST across, do not cut the yarn, do not turn. Weave in all ends before you crochet the border next.

Step 2- Crochet the border

With Yarn A still on your hook:

Rnd 1:

CH 1, SC in the last stitch where your last SC was made.
Work down the side of the blanket: Place SCs evenly along the rows. (I placed about 2 SC in each DC row and 1 SC in all other rows.) Make sure the total number of SCs along the side is even before the corner. In the corner: (SC, CH 1, SC)
Continue crocheting along the foundation chain: SC in each chain across to the next corner. In the corner: (SC, CH 1, SC)
Crochet up the other side of the blanket, placing SCs evenly as before. In the corner: (SC, CH 1, SC)
Continue along the top edge: SC in each stitch across to the first corner. Do not join — continue straight into the next round.

Rnd 2:

(SC, CH 1, SC) in the first CH-1 sp
Along each side: *Sk the next ST, then (SC, CH 1, SC) in the next ST,* rep *to* until you reach the next corner.
In each CH-1 sp at the corners: (SC, CH 1, SC)
When you reach the first corner, join with SL ST to the first ST

Fasten off, weave in all ends, and you’re all done!!
