If you’ve been looking for a quick and easy crochet project that’s actually useful, meet the Joy Cup Cozy — and yes, it’s a free crochet pattern! This little beauty is one of those beginner-friendly crochet projects that works up so fast you can make several in just a few hours. Perfect for when you need a last-minute handmade gift idea — or just want to dress up your morning coffee cup in style.

The Joy Cozy wraps snugly around your cup like a little hug, protecting your hands from the heat while keeping your drink warmer for longer. Think of it as a reusable crochet coffee sleeve that’s way cuter than the paper one from Starbucks.
I made mine in Christmas colors, and I am already planning cozy little gift baskets — a coffee cup dressed in a Joy Cup Cozy, a bag of high-quality coffee, a bottle of syrup, and a little note for my daughters’ coaches and teachers. How cute would that be as a teacher gift or a Christmas gift for any coffee lover?
This pattern also makes a brilliant craft market seller — small, quick to make, practical, and giftable.

The stitch is a one-row repeat textured stitch that I absolutely love and have used in so many of my projects — if you’ve made my North Pole Stocking or my Winter Sled Beanie, you’ll recognise it right away! It gives the cozy the most gorgeous texture and looks stunning when combining different colors.
For yarn, I used cotton yarn — and honestly, it’s the best choice for a crochet cup cozy. Cotton is naturally heat-resistant, won’t stretch out of shape over time, and provides a much better grip on a cup than acrylic. It’s also a dream to work with.

How to customize the size of the cup sleeve
For other cup sizes or yarn weights, chain an even number so it fits snugly around the bottom of the cup, then crochet to the desired height.
Pro tip: If your cup is narrower at the bottom and wider at the top, crochet the last 4 rounds with a slightly smaller size hook.
Special stitches
Reverse single crochet (RSC): Working from left to right, insert hook into the stitch to the right of the current stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on the hook. Continue working to the right around the edge.
