Three large chunky crochet Christmas stockings made with waffle stitch in cream, red, and green yarn on rustic wooden table with festive decor

Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year — I love everything about it! The cozy evenings, the festive decorations, and of course, the joy of making handmade gifts and decor.

I usually start my Christmas crochet list early (it’s a long one that keeps growing, lol!), and by December, I’ve made a little something for everyone — hats, ornaments, wine bottle bags, and cozy blankets.

This year, I’m so excited to share my Winterland Stocking crochet pattern — a large, chunky Christmas stocking that fits beautifully into any holiday décor. I used the waffle stitch for this design, and I just love the cozy texture and simple, modern look it creates.

This easy crochet stocking pattern is perfect for intermediate crocheters! It’s worked from the toe up in one piece using #5 bulky yarn. Why bulky yarn? It gives the stocking great structure, makes the waffle stitch stand out, and, best of all, it works up fast! I finished one in just over an hour. You can also use two strands of #4 medium-weight yarn if that’s what you have on hand.

Rnd 5: DC in each ST around, join with a SL ST into the 1st DC, CH1, turn. (32)

Step 2- Crochet the foot

Rnd 6: (WS) *FPDC in next 3 ST, BPDC in next ST* rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, turn. (32)

Rnd 7: (RS) *FPDC in next ST, DC in next 3 ST,*rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, turn. (32)

Rnd 8 -12: Rep rounds 6 and 7. At the end of Rnd 12, turn, and crochet the heel next.

Step 3 – Crochet the heel

You will switch from crocheting in rounds to rows. After finishing the heel, fold it inside the stocking. Attach one corner, crochet around to the other corner, and attach it. Then, resume working in rounds. The heel sides stay open until you close them at the end.

Row 1: (RS) HDC in same ST (place a SM here) and each of the next 12 ST, place a SM in last ST, CH 1, turn. (13 HDC)

Row 2: HDC2tog, HDC in each of next 9 ST, HDC2tog, CH 1, turn. (11 HDC)

Row 7: HDC INC in 1st ST, HDC in each of the next 9 ST, HDC INC in last ST, CH 1, do not turn. (13 HDC).

Join the heel next.

Step 4 – Join the heel

  1. Fold the heel in half, toward the inside of the stocking, SL ST into the base of the heel (in the MS), CH 1, *FPDC in the next ST, DC in the next 3 ST,* rep *to* around until you reach the next MS.
  2. Attach the other end of the heel: Insert your hook into the (MS) (already holding the last DC) and into the corner stitch of the heel. YO and complete a SL ST. CH 1.•
  3. *FPDC in the next HDC, DC in the next 3 HDC,* rep until you reach the next (MS), join with SL ST, CH 1, turn. (12 ST)

Note: This is your new starting point. From here on, crochet in rounds, turning at the end of each round. Leave the sides of the heel open; you will close them later. Next, crochet the cuff.

Step 5 – Crochet the cuff

Rnd 13: (WS) *FPDC in next 3 ST, BPDC in next ST* rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, turn.

Rnd 14: (RS)*FPDC in next ST, DC in next 3 ST,*rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, turn.

Rnd 15 -29: Rep rounds 13 and 14. At the end of Rnd 29, do not turn.

Rnd 30: SL ST in each ST around, join with SL ST into the 1st ST, fasten off.

Step 6 – Finish the stocking

Crochet the hanger loop: Slip knot, then SL ST in the top corner (on the heel side), CH12, SL ST the same ST to form a loop, CH1, SL ST in each CH around, SL ST in the first ST, fasten off.

Close the sides of the heels: Turn the stocking inside out. Sew the sides of the heel, using a tapestry needle and the yarn. Weave in all ends, and you are all done!

Pro Tips

  • Block your stocking to relax the stitches.
  • If you plan to use it for holding heavier gifts, add a lining for extra strength (not necessary if it’s just for decoration).
  • Lining is simple and only requires basic hand-sewing skills—watch here to see how it’s done!
