Color changing in tapestry crochet

Before you begin this project, you’ll need to be familiar with :

  • Color changing: This tutorial will guide you through the basic techniques. Read through the instructions below thoroughly and practice if needed. Watch this tutorial for extra help.
  • Reading a chart: Watch how to read a tapestry graph.

1- Incorporating The Contrast Yarn

  1. Insert your hook into the back loop only of the first single crochet.
  2. Place the contrast yarn over the hook.
  3. Yarn over with your working yarn and pull up a loop.
  4. Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook.
  5. Continue crocheting with your main yarn as usual.
  6. Carry the contrast yarn behind your stitches by crocheting over it.
  7. Keep carrying the contrast yarn even if it’s not needed right away.

2- How to Change Colors

  1. When the pattern or chart tells you it’s time to switch to Yarn B, start your last stitch with Yarn A as usual.
  2. Insert your hook into the stitch and pull up a loop with Yarn A.
  3. Now, yarn over with Yarn B instead of Yarn A.
  4. Pull through both loops on the hook to finish the stitch with Yarn B.
  5. From this point on, crochet with Yarn B.
  6. Keep carrying Yarn A behind your stitches by crocheting over it.

3- Design Specific

In this pattern, the contrast yarn isn’t carried all the way around. Once you’ve finished using it, simply drop it. You’ll pick it up again in the next round when the pattern calls for it.

  • After switching to Yarn B, carry Yarn A by crocheting over it like in tapestry crochet.
  • When you’re done with Yarn B, drop it—don’t carry it along.
  • Keep going with Yarn A.
  • In the next row, Yarn B will be on the opposite side of the motif.
  • When you need it again, bring it back, switch to Yarn B, and carry Yarn A behind your stitches.
  • When bringing back Yarn B, there will be a visible strand on the back.
  • Keep that strand a little loose, and crochet over it to hide it.

Step 1- Crochet the hat

  • Remember to carry the working yarn while using the contrast yarn.
  • Make sure to drop the contrast yarn when you finish using it. You will bring it back in the next round, ensuring it remains loose.
  • When bringing back the contrast yarn, there will be a thread behind your work; crochet over it to hide it.

With Yarn A, CH (64, 70,76) to make a foundation chain. SL ST into the 1st CH to make a circle (make sure the foundation chain is not twisted). SC in the same ST. From this point on, you will crochet continuously. You may use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round and move it up as you progress.

Rnd 1: SC in each ST around (crochet over the tail to hide it). (64, 70,76) ST. Crochet continuously next rounds.

Rnd 2-3: SC BLO in every ST around. (64, 70,76) ST.

Rnd 4: SC BLO in next 19 ST with Yarn A, add Yarn B, SC BLO in next ST with Yarn B, change to Yarn A, drop Yarn B, SC BLO in next (44, 50,56) ST with Yarn A.

Rnd 5: SC BLO in next 18 ST with Yarn A, SC BLO in next 2 ST with yarn B (bring back Yarn B and make sure it’s a little loose), drop Yarn B, SC BLO in next (44, 50,56) ST with Yarn A.

Rnd 6 – Rnd (27, 29,32) or to the desired height: Continue crocheting in rounds, making color changes as indicated on the graph below. At the end of Rnd12, cut Yarn B and continue with Yarn A.

At the end of the last Round, fasten off, cut your yarn, leaving a 10”- 15” tail for closing the top of the hat.

Step 2 – Close the hat

Using a tapestry needle, thread the long tail through the stitches of the last row of the hat. Pull the tail to close the top, tighten it, and secure it with a few knots.

Step 3 – Finish the hat

Make a pompom

Make a 4-inch diameter pom-pom using Yarn C. You can use a pom-pom maker, a 4×4-inch piece of cardboard, or even your hand. Make sure to leave the tie ends long. Watch here how to make a pompom

Attach the pompom

  • Place the pom-pom on the top center of the hat.
  • Turn the hat inside out.
  • Insert a crochet hook or yarn needle from the inside of the hat to the outside, close to the top center.
  • Pull one of the pom-pom’s yarn tails through the top of the hat, then repeat with the second tail, so both are inside the hat.
  • Flip the hat inside out so you can see the yarn tails inside the hat.
  • Tie the tails together securely with several knots to ensure the pom-pom is firmly attached.
  • Trim any excess yarn, weave in all ends, and you are all done!
