Pattern notes

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • The skill level is easy to intermediate.
  • This hat is crocheted from the bottom up, in rows for the brim. For the body of the, instead of working continuously in a circle, you work back and forth from the starting stitch. You must turn your work at the end of each round, working one row on the right side of the work and the following round on the wrong side of the work. Use a stitch marker to identify the start of rounds.
  • The slip stitch and CH1 do not count as stitches.
  • The hat is made in three sizes: child, teen, and adult.
  • If you want to make the hat in another size, crochet the brim to fit around the head, slightly snug but still comfy. Make sure the number of rows is a multiple of 2, 2hen follow the pattern and crochet until you reach the desired length, stopping about 1″ before it’s done. After that, make the decrease rows as shown in the pattern.
  • If you cannot match the gauge, you will need to adjust the stitches around the body of the hat, the number of rows, and possibly the brim length.

Step 1- Crochet the brim

With a 4.5 mm hook, chain (8, 9,10)

Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each chain across, turn. (7, 8,9) ST.

Row 2: CH1, SC in the same ST, SC BLO in each ST until 1ST remains, SC in the last ST, turn. (7, 8, 9) ST

Rows 3 – Row (64, 66, 72): Rep row 2. Do not fasten off at the end of the last row. (7, 8, 9) ST

Join the brim: Fold the brim in half, then line up the two ends. SL ST grabbing both, the 1st ST (BLO) on one side and the 1st foundation CH on the other side. SL ST into each ST (BLO) and the opposite CH of the foundation chain from the other edge. When you reach the end, remove your hook from your work and flip the brim inside out. This will now be the right side of your work. Switch to a 5 mm hook.

Step 2- Crochet the Body

Rnd 1: (RS) With a 5mm hook, CH2 (doesn’t count as a ST), DC in each row of the brim (visible holes), join with a SL ST into the 1st DC, CH2, turn. (64, 66, 72) ST.

Rnd 2: (WS) HDC in the 1st ST,* BPDC in next ST, HDC in next ST*, rep *to* around, finish with BPDC in last BPDC, join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, CH 2, turn. (64, 66, 72) ST.

Rnd 3: (RS) BPDC in the 1st BPDC,* HDC in next ST, BPDC in next ST*, rep *to* around, finish with a HDC in last HDC, join with a SL ST into the 1st BPDC, CH 2, turn. (64, 66, 72) ST.

Note: The easiest way to remember the stitch pattern is: crochet the HDC in the HDC and the BPDC in the BPDC.

Rnd 4 – Rnd (15, 17, 17) or to the desired height: Rep Rnd 2-3, turning your work at the end of each round. CH1 at the end of the last round, turn.

Rnd (16, 18, 18): (WS) *HDC DEC over next 2 ST*, rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, do not turn. (32, 33, 36) ST

Rnd (17, 19, 19): (RS) *HDC DEC over next 2 ST*, rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, do not turn. (16, 16+SC in last ST, 18) ST

Rnd (18, 20, 20): (WS) *HDC DEC over next 2 ST*, rep *to* around, join with a SL ST into the 1st ST, CH1, do not turn. (8, 8+ SC in last ST, 9)ST

Fasten off, leaving a 6”- 8” tail for weaving the hole in the top of the hat closed.

Weave in all ends, attach a pom-pom, a tag, and you are all done!
